Andrew Hamilton is a Canadian Drawing Master and a Canadian Plein air Painting Master and a retired Professor of Fine Arts for St Lawrence college and is an accomplished, award winning painter in acrylic, oil and watercolor mediums.
Using a highly imaginative palette of the three primaries plus white he has learned that all the colors of the universe are at hand. Combining this with a loose, inventive colorful style and with great freshness and immediacy he paints the landscape. Painting mostly on location, En Plein Air, Andrew paints in all four seasons capturing the beauty and natural rhythms of each.
Andrew has painted from coast to coast traveling painting and capturing
in paint this vast land. Using various media and traveling extensively, Andrew
captures the rhythms, colors and moods of the landscape that inspires him.
Andrew studied in Victoria and four years at OCAD. In his last year at OCAD Andrew had the privilege of apprenticing with acclaimed Canadian landscape painter Doris McCarthy for a year and a half who for many years studied and worked with the famed Canadian Group of Seven. Andrew was also lucky to have studied under artist John Joy and acclaimed artist and instructor Chinkok Tan. Andrew is inspired to follow in their landscape tradition.
He presently lives in Brighton Ontario and maintains a studio and gallery there called Gallery 96. Andrew is now retired from St.Lawrence College as Curator of the Marianne van Silfhout Gallery and Fine Arts Professor and Faculty Advisor to focus exclusively on his art, Gallery96 and his workshop and teaching practice.
Andrew has also taught at The Albright Knox Art Gallery, Durham College, The Varley Art Gallery, Thousand Island School of Art, Loyalist Summer Arts Programs and The Cedar Ridge Art Centre. Andrew has also taught and Juried for many art groups such as the Markham Group of artists, the Uxbridge Group of artists, the EOCCA, Scarborough Art Guild, Beaches group of Artists, Don valley Group of artists, Port Perry Group of artists, the Richmond Hill group of artists, the Gannonoque group of artists and and many others.
Andrew is also the Executive Director of ArtVentures his Plein air painting School that he has been teaching and running for over 23 years. He has taught plein air painting week, weekend and daily workshops on the Toronto Islands, Kensington Market, Riverdale Zoo, Unionville, McMichael, Algonquin Park, Killarney area, Manitoulin Island, Georgian Bay, Quebec city, Charlevoix Quebec, Peggys cove, Prince Edward County, and many other venues across Canada and New York State. Andrew is also the Director of the Markham School of Fine Art where he continues to run his own Art School for over 25 years out of the beautiful protected Airport Lands in the town of Whitevale Ontario.
Recently Andrew Walked to Toronto and biked back a 150 kilometers each way and drew and painted there and back to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canada. He enjoyed it so much he continued walking to Kingston and rode his bike back - another 150 kilometers each way drawing and painting documenting the journey.
He recently painted over 730 paintings in 730 days in oil and acrylic , made over 500 paper art pieces in printmaking collage, drawing and painting. He also travelled to Algonquin park in 2017 retracing Tom Thomsons canoe routes through Algonquin Park making 100 oil paintings on the 100th anniversary of Toms tragic death-documenting this on his facebook and instagram pages.
Andrew built the first business of art course for St lawrence College in Ontario and using the techniques and tools he learned over his years teaching this course went on to successfully sell over 500 paintings in 500 days through his social media outlets.
He is now teaching this and other courses through zoom, in person workshops and coaching sessions.
Andrew is currently painting 365 plein air paintings in 365 days travelling across Canada, Coast to Coast. Traveling Across Canada .. one painting at a time.. presently he is on painting 15..
